The best swimbait is always the one that gets you the most fish. Unfortunately, there are so many factors that the question of which is best can be answered in very different ways on different days. If you are an avid fisherman, you are likely to have more than a few swim bait types as well as other lures in your tackle box. But, it is not just a matter of having the most tackle; it is a matter of knowing which ones work in which location and when. That is why it is vital to know how fish behave in certain conditions and what they normally eat.
All fish have favorite foods but some of the more aggressive breeds will eat virtually anything that happens to be in the water. Your bait either has to look and act like a favorite food of the fish you are working at catching or it has to be so awesomely attractive that the fish cannot resist giving it a bit of a nibble. You also need to know the conditions in the water itself. If the day is sunny and bright and the water is clear and still, the fish can see most of the things that are in the water. They can also see you standing on the shore line and may be spooked by your shadow. On the other hand, a cloudy day can make your shadow disappear and murky water means that you have to have brighter, more vibrant and easy to spot baits.
The average swim bait is either plastic or rubber and tends to look just like the fish that the other fish like to eat. You can choose to have a fixed swimmer that is connected to the jig head or one that is free which gives you other options with your rigging. That alone can change the way the bait moves through the water. The more realistically it moves, the more likely it will be to give you real success. That being said, you should have a rough idea of the feeder fish that are in the waters that you are going to fish in.
Fish will go through spells where they are barely feeding and then there will be days where you can’t pull them out of the water fast enough. It is important to know when to fish, where to fish and of course, to have the best swimbait.
